Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has urged people to take a resolve on road safety to bring down road accidents by 50 per cent in the next 5 years. Replying to questions of people in the Talkathon programme on twitter, Mr Gadkari said, around five lakh accidents occur every year and over 1.5 lakh people lose their lives. He appealed the media, educational institutions and NGOs to spread awareness on Road Safety. <br/><br/>Mr Gadkari said, lane discipline in highways is always important for road safety and reducing accidents. He also appealed to the parents to not allow their minor children to drive vehicle. The Minister said, a road safety authority will be constituted soon and the Road Transport and Safety Bill will be placed during the next session of Parliament. <br/><br/>He said, 11 thousand crore rupees have been earmarked to fix black spots across the country in the next five years. The Minister said, airbags will also be made compulsory in every car soon. He said, people who help road accident victims will not be harassed by the officials and a guideline will be issued within 2-3 days. The programme was organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
