Gadkari stresses on need for wider consultations on electoral reforms

Bharatiya Janata Party President Mr. Nitin Gadkari has stressed the need for wider consultations on the electoral reforms and called for threadbare discussion in an all-party meeting on a variety of topics including right to recall, negative voting, compulsory voting and use of the Electronic Voting Machines. He was speaking at the ‘Meet-the-Press’ programme organised by the Nagpur Union of Working Journalists in Nagpur today. He further informed that he would personally meet the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar in this connection and request them to convene an all-party meet to discuss the relevant issues.
Mr. Gadkari termed the lead taken by the Gujarat Government to make voting compulsory in the Local Bodies’ as a welcome step and opined that entire country should follow this example. It is in the national interest and therefore, must involve everyone, not any single party and should be discussed rising above politics, he said.
Replying to a question, he said that the Telangana issue had been mishandled by the Congress. The BJP was in favour of the smaller states including Vidarbha and would certainly support any such proposal brought in by the Congress-led Government at the Centre.
Mr. Gadkari further said that the alliance with Shivsena in the state was intact and the party had no plans to ally with Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
The new team of the BJP office-bearers would be installed before the national convention slated to be held in the month of February next year, he added.
