Gadkari inaugurates Mumbai Port Trust's 2nd liquid chemical berth at Pir Pau

Union Shipping Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated Mumbai Port Trust's second liquid chemical berth at Pir Pau, Mumbai. <br/><br/>Mr. Gadkari said the new facility will lead to increased profits for Mumbai Port, increase employment and decrease in pollution. He added that government has accorded priority to shipping development in the country and the port infrastructure is getting a major boost under the Sagarmala initiative.<br/><br/>Mumbai Port Trust's second liquid chemical berth is a state of the art facility, built at a cost of Rupees 127 crore. It is designed to handle 55000 DWT (deadweight tonnes). Mumbai Port Trust's Chairman Mr. Ravi Parmar has informed that the port's cargo handling capacity will increase by 2.5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) per annum. He said the full commissioning of this berth will also result in substantial reduction of cost for importers with faster turnaround of ships carrying big parcel size.<br/><br/>Earlier in the day Mr Gadkari opened the new bridge across River Thirumalairajanar in Karaikal. The bridge replaces the 160 year old bridge built during French regime. He also inaugurated the construction of approach road for the road over bridge at Arumparthapuram in Puducherry.
