French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe on Wednesday said Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi can stay in the country only if he remains out of politics. Talking to a local television channel, the French Minister said one of the hypotheses envisaged is that Gaddafi will stay in Libya, but with one condition that he keeps a distance from Libyan political life. Mr. Juppe said the cease-fire can be agreed by a formal and clear engagement of Gaddafi to give up his civil and military responsibilities. Last week, the Minister confirmed on French radio that there were contacts with envoys of Gaddafi, but denied any real negotiation.
