In Maharashtra, the death toll in the police encounter with the Maoists in Dhanora taluka of the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district on Friday has gone up to eight now. One more student, who was seriously injured in the incident, succumbed to the injuries in Nagpur today. The dead include three soldiers of Indo-Tibetan Police force and five others including three school children studying in the nearby residential school at Sawargaon in Dhanora taluka. According to the official sources, the incident took place when a team of the ITBP jawans crossed over from the Chhattisgarh side following the Naxal trail. The vehicle carrying the ITBP team was blown in a landmine explosion and subsequently subjected to indiscriminate firing by the Naxals. The ITBP personnel were killed in the incident. Another ITBP jawan, who was injured in the encounter, has been taken to Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh for treatment while the bodies of the martyrs would be taken to their base after the post mortem at Dhanora. Secondly, nine of the ten school children injured in the cross fire between the police and the Maoists are being treated in the rural hospital at Murumgaon and Gadchiroli. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister and Guardian Minister of the district R. R. Patil is going to visit the area and take review of the situation today. The additional security forces have been already pressed into service for combing operations in the nearby Naxal strongholds of the district and the border with Chhattisgarh has been sealed to prevent escape of the Naxals.
