G20 ministers to back measures to provide info about black money

In a major gain for India, the G-20 Finance Ministers have decided to back measures to provide information about money stashed in tax havens.

A communique issued at the end of their two-day meeting in Paris on Saturday said the meeting has underlined the importance of a comprehensive tax information exchange.

Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, R Gopalan, who accompanied Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to the meeting said there is acceptance of G-20 for the first time to put its weight behind the issues relating to obtaining tax information. He said this is a big victory for India because New Delhi a was responsible for getting this sentence included.

Mukherjee, during his bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the US, UK, Australia and France, had put in strenuous efforts to get G-20 on board with India's concerns on black money.

Gopalan said that global concerns on tax evasion are expected to be reflected from the Cannes Leader Summit scheduled next month.

Earlier, in his intervention, Mukherjee called upon European countries to find funds within to fight their debt crisis. He said resources of the multilateral lender have already been trebled. Therefore, the European countries countries facing debt crisis should look up to their central banks for funding.

Muherjee strongly opposed imposition of carbon tax as an additional source of funding to fight climate change. He said some of the measures like carbon export optimisation tax offsets violate the principles of the Convention as their burden falls entirely on developing countries.

He said these cannot be recognised as a source of new and additional finance for climate change.
