G-20 summit begins today, Eurozone crisis to dominate

The sixth Summit of the group of 20 industrialized and emerging economies, G-20 will begin today at Cannes in France. The two-day summit is being held in the back drop of the sovereign debt crisis in Eurozone which is likely to dominate the deliberations at the meeting.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Cannes on Wednesday night to attend the summit. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon are also a part of the Indian delegation.

The Indian delegation is likely to focus on the international monetary system, financial regulations, global governance and restructuring of the IMF and the World Bank.

In his departure statement, Dr. Manmohan Singh asserted that developing economies like India need a conducive global environment to address the challenges they face.

The Prime Minister will hold two separate bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President, Nicholas Sarkozy today.

AIR correspondent reports that India has already made it clear that the IMF should provide the resources needed to fund the Eurozone bail out.
