Fully prepared to deal with any industrial disaster, says Govt

Even as discussion continues on the Bhopal gas tragedy, Government says it is fully prepared to deal with any industrial disaster as a comprehensive disaster management policy is in place.

In an exclusive interview to AIR correspondent Vijay Raina, the chief of National Disaster Management Institute, NDMI, P.G. Dhar Chakrabarti however, conceded that there are loopholes which need to be covered.

He said government still has to pay attention to the management of effects of industrial disasters which reach out side the premise of the factory.

Mr. Chakrabarti said that 1986 Environment Protection Act is a comprehensive law covering all aspects of industrial disasters.

Mr. Chakrabarti added that it stresses on a two pronged approach to industrial disaster management. First is on-site protection within the industry’s premises.

The second aspect is the off-site effects of the disaster, which spread to the adjoining areas.

The NDMI chief while talking about nuclear safety said that there are little chances that any nuclear accident may actually take place. He added that four of the eight National Disaster Management force battalions have been trained to handle nuclear disasters.
