Fuel loading begins at second unit of Kudankulam nuclear plant

In Tamil Nadu, fuel loading has started in the second unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant. The power generation is expected to start by the first week of June after completion of checks by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board officials. The fuel loading of 163 Uranium fuel assemblies in the second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant started on Wednesday according to officials. The hot run was conducted and tests were being done in the second unit of the nuclear power plant built with Russian expertise. The 1000 Mega watt nuclear reactor is the second unit in Kudankulam. The first unit of Kudankulam is presently generating its full capacity of 1000 mega watt. The power generation was stopped last year on June 24 for maintenance purpose. Last month power generation was started again and till now 8500 million units of electricity has been generated. The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant set up with Russian expertise achieved criticality in July 2013.
