From one to 101 medals for India in 76 years of CWG; PM to meet medal winners today

India is in a celebration mood with its sports men and women bringinglaurels to the country in the just concluded Common Wealth Games inDelhi. The country has come a long way from winning just one bronzemedal in 1934 to 101 medals this time. This includes 38 gold, 27silver and 36 bronze at the Games giving second position in the medaltally.The performance is more than double than the earlier Games inMelbour 4 years ago.Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will meet the Indian medal winners atthe Commonwealth Games this evening.Defence Ministry today rewarded armed forces sportsmen by giving away12 lakh rupees each for winner of a gold medal, Seven lakh each forsilver medal and five lakh for those who brought in a bronze medalduring the Delhi Commonwealth games. Giving away the cheques to themedalist in a ceremony in New Delhi today, Defence Minister Mr. A.K.Antony also announced out of turn promotion for the each medal winner.AIR correspondent reports that the armed forces brought laurels to thecountry by bagging 10 Gold, 7 Silver and 8 Bronze out of 101 totalmedals won by the Indian participants in the 19th edition ofcommonwealth games. Congratulating the winners, the Defence Ministerexpressed hope that Defence forces athletes would better their recordin 5th Military World Games to be held in Brazil next year. Mr.Antony said this will be an ideal preparation for 2012 LondonOlympics. The Ministry of Defence has already allocated 50 crorerupees for Mission Olympics.Several states and Railways have already announced awards to medalwinners of their teams.
