Fresh volcano eruption in Indonesia kills six more; over 90K evacuated

Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi blasted deadly gas and ash into the sky again today, killing six more people. According to National Disaster Management Board, Mount Merapi's lava and ash have killed at least 44 people and injured dozens more since it began erupting on October 26. About 90,000 people have been evacuated. Vulcanologists said, today's high intensity eruption was the strongest. The eruption was bigger than yesterday's as heat clouds and volcanic material were shot 10 kilometres into the sky. Heavy rain also lashed the area, cooling flows of lava that were encroaching into some abandoned villages on the slopes of the volcano near Yogyakarta. Emergency shelters had been moved to 15 kilometres from the summit from 10 kilometres previously because of the increased strength of the eruptions and the villagers were evacuated to the shelters. Indonesia's transport ministry has changed flight paths in the area to keep planes away from the vicinity of Merapi. Indonesia is also struggling with the aftermath of a tsunami in the remote Mentawai islands off Sumatra last week that killed 431 people, with 88 still missing. The disaster agency said, floods have killed at least in the islands of East Nusa Tenggara province.
