In Sikkim, one person was killed in fresh tremors of low intensity, felt on Saturday morning in the North district on Saturday. A number of pre and post tremor shocks were also recorded which could not be felt due to their very low intensity.The strongest of the tremors were felt at around thirteen minutes and forty one seconds past six o’ clock on Saturday morning. The epicenter of the tremors ,measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, was located some 34kms north of the Gangtok based Tadong Seismological Observatory near, in the North district itself. The tectonic movements took place some five kilometres beneath the surface of the earth.The people of the district, who still have the sad memories of the Eighteenth September earthquake fresh in their minds, got so scared that they immediately ran out of their houses to safety.One person of Dzongu died of shock during the tremors. The Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling, currently on a six days long tour to the North district has announced an ex-gratia payment of one lakh rupees to the next of the kin of the deceased. Meanwhile, the Sikkim Bihari Jagaran Manch has decided to observe the Chhath Festival, beginning on Sunday, in a solemn manner as a mark of respect to the victims of the 18th September earthquake.
