Fresh flash floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir killed around 70 people Friday, taking the death toll in the state's worst floods in nearly six decades to almost 90. Agencies report that at least 65 people were killed in the Jammu region in house collapses and landslides, while around 5 people lost their lives in Kashmir. River Jhelum was flowing above the danger mark in the Kashmir Valley. Most parts of south Kashmir, including Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam district have been submerged. Officials said, the water level in Rambiara stream in Shopian district was also rising very fast, threatening to inundate the only south Kashmir district not affected by floods, so far.
AIR correspondent reports that floods have damaged roads, dozens of bridges and buildings, and crops and army has launched a massive rescue operation.
AIR correspondent adds that the bus carrying 67 people, which remained trapped in flood water in Nowshera, was retrieved Friday. The district administration confirmed the death of about 63 people in the tragedy.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh will visit the flood-hit areas of the state today. Minister of State in PMO, Jitendra Singh, will accompany him. The Home Minister will undertake an aerial survey of flood-affected areas to assess the situation. He will also hold a review meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the state government officials.
