French Open Tennis begins in Paris

French Open Tennis, the second Grand Slam of the season, began in Paris today.  In Women's Singles, German fifth seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber saw her hopes of a career Grand Slam ended by Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova.

Fifth-seeded Wimbledon champion Kerber slumped to a 4-6, 2-6 defeat to 18-year-old Potapova who was making her French Open debut. Prominent  winners among women's singles were P Martic and G Muguruza.

In men's singles, third seeded Roger Federer beat world No. 73 Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 6-2,6-4,6-4 in the opening round. 

Federer is making a return to Roland Garros for the first time in four years. Other prominent winners in opening round of Men's Singles are K.Nishikori and M.Cilic.  Prajnesh Gunneswaran who is the only Indian in Men's Singles, lost to H.Dellien of Bolivia 1-6,3-6,1-6 in the opening round.

Other Star players taking part in the tournament include top seeds Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, defending champions Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Serena Williams and her sister Venus.

Karolina Pliskova and Venus Williams will also be seen in action. Indians figuring in the Doubles are Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, but they will be playing with separate partners.
