In French Open Tennis, world number one Novak Djokovic ended nine-time and defending champion Rafael Nadal's wonder run at Rolland Garros last night. In a game that was touted as the match of the tournament, the top seeded Serb beat the sixth seeded Spaniard in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 to book a place in the semi-finals. This was Djokovic's first victory over Nadal in their seven meetings in Paris. For Nadal, who is known as the King of Clay, it was just his second defeat in 72 French Open matches.Djokovic, now just two wins from completing the career Grand Slam of all four major titles, will play Briton Andy Murray in the semi-finals on Friday. Murray defeated David Ferrer, 7-6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 last night in the other quarterfinal. The second semi-final will be played between Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.In the Women's Singles, world number one Serena Williams and Swiss Timea Bacsinszky stormed into semi-finals yesterday. While the top seeded American sailed past Sara Errani of Italy, 6-1, 6-3, Bacsinszky defeated Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium, 6-4, 7-5 to book a French Open semi-final berth for the first time. Serena and Bacsinszky will face each other in the semi-finals today, with Serbia's Ana Ivanovic and Czech Lucie Safarova playing the other last-4 fixture.
