Government will provide free higher education to students from Universities and Colleges who bring recognition for the country at International and National level Sports events. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said guideline in this regard have been approved and universities concerned will make special efforts in terms of completion of syllabus and attendance of the sports person due to loss of classes. He said this would bring relief to sportspersons who need to spend additional time practicing, and miss classes as a result.Mr. Sibal also announced starting of a national level university Cricket league and university level Hockey league to promote sports in a big way in the campuses. The Cricket league would be played among eight top universities in T-20 format from among those who qualify through a zonal competition. Similarly, the Hockey league will be played among top eight teams selected through zonal competitions.
