France raises retirement age to 62

The French Senate has voted to raise the country's retirement age from 60 to 62 as part of the Government's pension reform plan. The union leaders have called for a national day of strikes on the 16th of this month against the package, designed to cut pension costs. The Lower House of Parliament has already approved the change but further reforms are still to be voted on. The Government hopes the package will be passed in its entirety by the end of this month. Workers have already staged protests against the proposals.
