France: Left-wing parties seal coalition deal to challenge Emmanuel Macron in Parliamentary elections

In France, Socialist Party has sealed a deal to join the French left's first broad coalition pact in 20 years, ahead of Parliamentary elections to be held in June this year. The pact, which the Greens and Communists already approved earlier this week.
''
''The Socialists were once the dominant party of the leftist group and several leaders left the party rather than submit to the coalition after a poor show in last month's vote. The Socialist Party delegates voted for the move with 167 in favor and 101 against, finally sealing the deal.
''
''The former President of France Francois Hollande, who served his term just before Emmanuel Macron came to power, was from the Socialist Party, their popularity has seen a fast decline in subsequent years. Their Presidential candidate last month, Anne Hidalgo, secured only around 1.7 percent of the vote.
''
''President Macron, who won 28 percent votes in the first round before defeating Le Pen in the second round, is also forming his own coalition with other centrist parties. The far-right traditionally do not perform particularly well at Parliamentary elections as other parties work together to block them.
''
''In recent years, the President's party has also controlled the Parliament, meanwhile, if the leftist coalition wins, it may put Mr Macon in a tricky situation.
