France backs India’s civil nuclear programme, claim for permanent UNSC membership

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has expressed his full support to India's civil nuclear programme and backed India's claim for a permanent membership in the UN security Council.Sarkozy also said that terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan is a major source of instability in the world. He was addressing scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation in Bangalore today soon after his arrival there to begin his 4 day visit to India. Sarkozy said France fully backs India's entry in to Nuclear Suppliers Group – NSG. He said there is need to put an end to nuclear isolation of India. He felt it was injustice done to India by challenging its right to access to civil nuclear energy. India is now going to be a full-fledged member of the multilateral groups overseeing non-proliferation regimes and France will support India's application for candidacy of NSG. But he said, there is certain inconsistency in India's approach as while it wanted development of clean energy on one hand, at the same time restricting access to its facilities. Sarkozy was happy that a French company Areva will be setting up nuclear plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra that will produce 10,000 MW of non-polluting energy. The French President also said it is unthinkable to keep a country of over one billion out of the UN Security Council. He said one cannot stand still if India wants to move ahead in 21st century. He said, India, Brazil, Germany, Japan, some representatives of Africa and Arab world must be in UN Security Council. Condemning the 26/11 attacks, he said any such strike on India is an attack on democracy and all democracies stand by India. He observed that terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan is a major source of instability in the world. He praised India's role in Afghanistan and said the world cannot afford to lose the war against Taliban.Speaking of France's relationship with India, Sarkozy said that his country has been a good friend of India. Both the countries mean what they say. Sarkozy showered praise on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying the Indian leader was obsessed with peace through development and eradication of poverty. India's challenge is that if it succeeds through peace, it will have a huge knock-out effect on the world. He said India and France are united by common values and believe that international relations should not be governed by brutality or force. It should be based on dialogue and rule of law. Sarkozy said the relationship between the two countries should go much further. Appreciating India's growth, he said its voice has to be heard in the global level. On education sector, Sarkozy said he expected a three-fold growth in the number of Indian students going to France. AIR correspondent says, Sarkozy spoke high of the relationship between the two countries and said it should go further. He hoped that interaction between Scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs of the two countries will increase. He called India a beacon of peace, tolerance and freedom. The French leader said India has tought the world a unique lesson of co-existence where different languages, traditions and culture have flourished since centuries. He sought India’s support for global efforts to live in harmony and to combat climate change. The Chairman of ISRO Dr. Radhakrishnan who spoke on this occasion informed that INSAT-3D will be launched from Ariane next year and recalled French support to Indian Space programme since its genesis. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni made an unscheduled visit to Taj Mahal today. They flew from Bangalore to Agra.
