Four suicide bombers attack UN office in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, four suicide bombers attacked a U.N. office in western city of Herat but no staff members were hurt. Two security guards and a policemen were hurt in the explosion and subsequent fire fight with the attackers. The first of the bombers detonated his explosive-laden vehicle at the gate of the compound, allowing three of his colleagues equipped with machine guns and suicide vests to enter the facility. Spokesman for provincial police chief of Herat Noor Khan Nikzad said that three of the bombers, who were on foot, had disguised in women clothes. A UN official, who did not wanted to be named, said that no UN administrative personnel were inside the compound because of weekend holiday. An insurgent attack last year on a guesthouse killed five foreign UN staffers in Kabul. Herat, one of Afghanistan's biggest city, is near the border with Iran. It has until recently been relatively peaceful though the security situation has been deteriorating. Meanwhile, nine Taliban fighters, including two commanders, were killed as security forces stormed their hideout in southern Kandahar province.
