Four cotton farmers commit suicide as continued dry spell hits the crop in Telangana

Four cotton farmers committed suicide apprehending crop failure on account of dry spell in Telangana Friday.

The farmers, natives of Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Khammam districts, were distressed as the cotton seeds planted by them in their land failed to germinate due to extended dry spell.

Distressed over crop failure, they reportedly consumed pesticide to end their lives.

Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been reeling under drought-like conditions due to prolonged dry spell triggered by delayed monsoon.

The Kharif sowing operations are moving at a slow pace due to scant rainfall. The agriculture officials in both the States are chalking out alternative plans for farmers to tide over the crisis.

Meanwhile, both the States are witnessing light to moderate rains at some places under the influence of trough of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.
