The Centre is formulating a comprehensive strategy to deal with the growing menace of naxalism more effectively in the country. In an interaction with reporters accompanying the Prime Minister to the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, official sources said the Home Ministry’s proposal for the use of special forces, including air power, is being considered by the appropriate committees and no decision has been taken as yet. The sources said, while a strong case has been made out for the greater use of force against the naxalites, the government is evaluating the downsides of such a strategy. The sources said a large number of forces in the Naxal affected areas are likely to be deployed. The government is of opinion that there should be a public cooperation in fighting the Naxalites and public at large should spread an awareness about the menace of Naxalism. On the issue of Chinese incursions, the official cautioned the media against sensationalizing the border incidents. On reports doubting President Pratibha Patil's visit to China in the current atmosphere, he said the visit is on and it is only an issue of dates.On Pakistan diverting US assistance for strengthening its military against India, he said this has been happening for decades and India has not been much successful in persuading the US in containing or preventing it. To a question on the reported house arrest of JuD Chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Sayeed in Lahore, the official said there have been contradictory reports on that.
