The mortal remains of former Union Minister and former governor of Haryana Mahavir Prasad today consigned to flames at the banks of Saryu River in Gorakhpur district. His younger brother Prabhunath Prasad lit the funeral pyre. Senior Congress leaders and union ministers including Sriprakash Jaiswal, Jaidev Jena, UP congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and other dignitaries were present in the funeral. Veteran Congress leader Mahvir Prasad had died in a Delhi hospital on Sunday after a brief illness.The Prime Minister has condoled the passing away of former Union Minister and veteran Congressman Mahabir Prasad. In a condolence message to the late leader's daughter Mrs. Vimla Devi, Dr Manmohan Singh recalled Mahabir Prasad's commitment to public good and described him as a nationalist and a leader whose contribution to the cause of the underprivileged will be long remembered.
