Former Telecom Minister convicted in 1996 corruption case

A Delhi court today held former Telecom Minister Sukhram guilty of misusing his official position when he was in the P V Narasimha Rao cabinet and giving undue favour to a cable supply company in a 1996 corruption case.

Special CBI Judge R P Pandey convicted Sukhram under various provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act and criminal conspiracy. The court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence tomorrow.

Sukhram awarded a lucrative contract to a private firm, Haryana Telecom Limited, for supplying cables to the government at inflated rates after receiving a bribe of 3 lakh rupees 15 years back.
