Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has asserted that he can also contest election to President office if 19th amendment to the constitution has no binding effect on Presidential elections held on 8th January, 2015.<br/><br/>Mr. Rajapakse said if Supreme court rules that incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena can remain in office for full six year term, then both he and former President Chandrika Kumaraunga could contest the next Presidency.<br/><br/>He was reacting to Mr. Sirisena's reference to Supreme court seeking opinion on whether he can stay in office for six years till 2021. <br/><br/>A five-bench held an open court hearing today where the Attorney General opined that the President can stay in office till 2021.<br/><br/>The court has said that it will communicate its decision to President in coming days. The 19th amendment, passed by Parliament in May, 2015 has made an individual holding Presidential polls for two terms, ineligible to contest the elections again while limiting the Presidential term to five years.
