Former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar passed away in New Delhi today. He was 92. Mr Jakhar was ailing for some time. Balram Jakhar was elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for two consecutive terms from 1980 to 1989. He was elected to the Lok Sabha four times and also served as the Union Agriculture Minister. He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly for two terms and served as Minister in the state and also Leader of Opposition. Mr Jakhar also served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Dr Jakhar was a popular leader who enriched the Indian Parliamentary democracy in his long political journey.<br/><br/>Congress President Sonia Gandhi has condoled the death of senior party leader Dr Balram Jakhar. In her message, Mrs. Gandhi said, Congress party and the entire nation will forever remember the contributions made by Dr Jakhar during the course of his long public life, particularly to the cause of farming community. She said, be it as a legislator, Parliamentarian, Minister, Speaker or Governor, Dr Jakhar forever remained at the forefront in taking up issues concerning agriculture and farmers.<br/><br/>Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has condoled the demise of the former Lok Sabha Speaker Dr Balram Jakhar. In her message, Mrs. Mahajan said, the passing away of such a distinguished and soft-spoken leader is an irreparable loss for the nation.
