Former Brazilian soccer player great Socrates, the clever playmaker who captained Brazil at the 1982 Football World Cup, died on Sunday. He was 57. According to a statement by the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Socrates died of septic shock resulting from an intestinal infection. Socrates played for Brazil at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. Known for his elegant style on the field, the lanky Socrates was a leading player of his generation along with fellow Brazil midfielder Zico. He also played in Italy for Fiorentina.
