In Kerala, former Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly (Varapuzha) Dr Cornelius Elenjikkal passed away at a private hospital in Kochi this morning. He was 93. Dr Elenjikkal was suffering from lung infection for the past few days. He was also the former President of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council and the Bishop ofVijayapuram for nearly 16 years. A lyricist who has penned over 500 devotional songs, Dr Cornelius Elenjikkal has authored ten books. He had deep knowledge in Upanishads and held doctorates in Hindu Philosophy and Canon Law.Union Minister of Defence Mr A K Antony has condoled the death of Dr Cornelius Elanjikkal.Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prof K V Thomas in his condolence message described the former Archbishop as an epitome of simplicity, who raised his voice for the poor and downtrodden.
