Foreign Secretary to discuss fishermen killing issue with Sri Lanka

The killing of Indian fishermen will be the main agenda of the Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao's talks with Sri Lankan leaders on Monday. Mrs Rao will be travelling to the island nation on Sunday to discuss the issue. India has already reacted strongly to the incident by describing it as very serious and unacceptable India wants the incident to be thoroughly investigated and arrangement put in place to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. New Delhi also wants a meeting of Joint Working Group on fishermen which has not met since 2008. An understanding was reached then to avoid violence or intimidation of the fishemen on either side. Officials say the incidents of arrests and seizure of fishing boats had come down drastically after the arrangement. Although the Srilankan navy has denied that the fisheman was killed by them, Indian officials maintained that the incident happened in their waters and it is their responsibility.A fisherman was killed and two others were injured while fishing off Kodiakarai coast on the 22nd of January.On January 12, an Indian fisherman was killed in Palk Straits when Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at three fishermen.
