Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar today met Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his visit to Male and discussed bilateral relations. Mr Jaishankar during his meeting assured that India will continue to assist and collaborate with Maldives to enhance opportunities for commercial investments. <br/><br/>President Yameen in his remarks expressed his firm commitment to further elevate existing relations through different avenues of cooperation. Sources said the political situation in Maldives and geostrategic developments also came up for discussions during the meeting.<br/><br/>The visit comes as there is political upheaval in the tiny nation with opposition parties denouncing the President of dictatorial policies and trying to curb dissent. Most of the opposition leaders are in jail or facing charges in different cases. <br/><br/>Former President Mohammed Nasheed has openly sought help from neighboring countries including India to restore democracy and ensure free polls, scheduled for next year. President Yameen has also promoted investments from China, feared to create strategic imbalance in the Indian Ocean.
