In Sri Lanka, visiting Foreign Secretary Mrs Nirupama Rao today flew to Vavuniya to see the Manik farm IDP camps and to interact with the war displaced civilians. Mrs Rao also visited the Kadirgamar relief village and interacted with the residents of the camps. A big crowd gathered near the area and the Foreign Secretary gave a patient hearing to them. Most of the residents from the Mullaithivu and Puthumathalan areas requested her to expedite the de-mining process , so that they can go back to their original places of settlement . Nearly 28000 people in the Manik Farm camps are still awaiting resettlement pending the de-mining process. Another 2000 people are staying in the temporary camps in Jaffna, who are also awaiting resettlement. Ms Rao also met MP Shiv Shakti Anand from the Tamil National Alliance along with a small group of locals who submitted their petition of grievances to her. Some of the villagers complained of the security forces still occupying their land. Government Agent PSM Charles and Security Forces Commander, Vanni briefed her on the resettlement progress in the area.
