Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao arrived in Dhaka on Monday on a two day visit to Bangladesh. She was received at the airport by Ms. Mashfee Binte Shams, the Director General for South Asia from the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign affairs along with India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka Mr. Rajeet Mitter and other senior officials. Later in the evening, Ms. Rao held discussions with Mr.Mashiur Rahman Economic affairs adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister and Dr .Gowher Rizvi who is the Prime Minister’s adviser on Foreign Affairs. India and Bangladesh will be holding Foreign Secretary level talks on Tuesday morning which will be focused on various aspects of the bilateral relations and sub regional issues. Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will be leading the Indian delegation during the talks with the Bangladesh delegation led by Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes. The discussions will provide both sides an opportunity to take stock of the progress of implementation of the decisions taken during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in January last year and also help in preparations for the proposed visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Bangladesh. Later on Tuesday afternoon Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will also call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr.Dipu Moni. The Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Bangladesh will provide both sides an opportunity to review the progress made on various issues agreed to in the joint statement issued during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit. In addition to this the discussions will also focus on finalizing the issues and agreements that need to be sorted out ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s proposed visit to Dhaka. Both sides are presently engaged in the process of finalizing the draft agreement on sharing arrangements of dry season water flows of Teesta and Feni rivers. The talks will also provide an opportunity to review the progress made on the ground level surveys being conducted to resolve outstanding border issues. Apart from this, the talks will also focus on the progress made on the implementation of projects in Bangladesh under the One billion Dollar credit line being provided by India and also discuss issues that need to resolved with regard to the transit facility agreed to be provided by Bangladesh.
