Foreign Secretary Jaishankar calls on Sri Lankan President Sirisena

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar called on President Maithripala Sirisena at his office today and discussed all issues of bilateral importance. Earlier in the day he met former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Tamil leader R Sampanthan. Foreign Secretary concluded his two day Sri Lanka tour and has departed for New Delhi a short while ago. <br/><br/>According to a senior official at the President's office, the meeting lasted for an hour and covered most issues of bilateral importance. Meetings with top leadership in the country discussed ways to further enhance economic, strategic and cultural ties. Progress on Indian development projects in Sri Lanka were reviewed and preparation was made for the important Joint Commission meeting that will be held in Colombo next month and will be headed by the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries. <br/><br/>Earlier in the day today, Mr Jaishankar met former president Chandrika Kumartunga, who is playing a key role in reconciliation efforts in the country. He also met Tamil National Alliance chief and leader of Opposition, Mr R Sampanthan before heading back to New Delhi a short while ago.
