Food prices to come down only after ensuing Rabi season: Pawar

The Agriculture Minister said that due to impact of scant monsoon and floods, the prices will not come down immediately. He said that the growth of agriculture would hover around 1.5 per cent this year. Mr Pawar said that 10 lakh tones of wheat and 5 lakh tones of rice have been allocated for open market sale to moderate the prices. Mr. Pawar said, enough food grain stocks are available including rice and wheat in the godowns to bridge the gap between demand and supply. He said that the government has taken measures to augment the production of Rabi to meet the losses in Kharif crops.<br/> <br/>In his interaction at the conference, the Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said that the government has been able to control the prices of petroleum products and increased the production of crude oil by 10 per cent and natural gas by 53 per cent. He said, by the year 2015, the piped gas will be made available in more than 200 tons.<br/>The Road Transport and Highways Minister Kamal Nath said that priority is being given to road construction in Naxal affected areas. He said, the policy on toll tax will also be streamlined.<br/><br/>The government said that the food prices will come down in a couple of months with the arrival of Rabi crops and expects the economy to grow by 6.5 per cent in the current fiscal. Expressing concern over the price rise of food at the Economic Editors' Conference in New Delhi, the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Dr.Ahluwalia said the food prices have started coming down and will decline further in the next few months with the arrival of Rabi crop.<br/>
