Life has been disrupted in Manipur with prices of essential commodities sky-rocketing owing to blockade on National Highways. An indefinite economic blockade imposed by the All Naga Students Union on NH 39 and 53 from April 17 midnight is still continuing without any sign of a resolution. Situation is becoming worse in Manipur as oil depots are closing down and hospitals shut due to non-availability of life-saving drugs and oxygen. The Students Union alleged that the Manipur government had not given enough powers to the Autonomous District Council (ADC) and opposed the scheduled elections.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said the Government is trying to hold elections for local bodies in the hill areas after a gap of 20 years and the matter can be resolved by amending the law in the state Assembly. Reports say, businessmen in the markets have hiked the prices of essential commodities and petrol is being sold in black market at some places at Rs 150 per litre. Over 300 Imphal-bound loaded trucks, including oil tankers, are stranded at Assam and the Manipur Drivers Welfare Association has urged all to allow the drivers to return home as some of them are seriously ill and have no money even to buy food.
