‘Food prices have started coming down’, asserts Govt.; Opposition disagrees, slams govt.

Refuting opposition charge of unprecedented price rise, intervening in the debate on the issue in the Lok Sabha today, the Finance Minister said the country had managed to overcome such situations in the past. The debate is continuing in the two Houses.AIR Parliamentary Correspondent reports that the debate in both the houses began this morning after suspending the question hours. Opposition Leaders, across the board, charged the government with failure on the food inflation front. Initiating the debate in the Lok Sabha, the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, demanded a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee to look into the alleged scams of wheat, rice and sugar.In the Rajya Sabha, while initiating the debate, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Arun Jaitley, painted a scenario of alarming food prices, and alleged that the government has not been able to manage the food economy effectively. Members belonging to ruling alliance in both the houses, while supporting the government initiatives in dealing with inflation, urged states to strengthening the public distribution system and take stringent measures against hoarders and black marketers.
