Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said he is in favour of lifting the ban from Khesari dal if it is found fit for human consumption. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, he said its cultivation will help reduce pressure on import of pulses. The Khesari dal was banned in 1961 due to health reasons. Food Safety Regulator, FSSAI has sought Health Ministry's approval to hold public consultation on approval of three varieties of Khesari dal. Mr. Paswan said he has seen the media reports that new varieties of Khesari dal have been developed and if they prove to be fit for human consumption, its cultivation should be allowed. He said he himself has eaten Khesari dal for 15 years and never had any health problems.
