Food inflation likely to come down around 5 to 6 pc

Food inflation is likely to come down around 5 to 6 percent in next four months. It is over 12 percent at present. Member of Planning Commission dealing agriculture Abijet Sen in a chat with AIR correspondent in New Delhi that this prediction is subject to good moon soon. In a related development the Moon soon activity has again revived with many parts of the country experiencing good rains. The rainfall activity was by and large subdued during the second week compared to the first week of this month. Mr. Sen said that there is an immediate need of increasing the production of pulses in the country as their is a gap between the demand and supply. Official sources said that a record production of pulses has been recorded in the crop year 2009-10 . The production of food grains in the country is estimated to reach 218 million tonnes .The agriculture ministry says this is despite severe draught conditions in the last Kharief which hit the production. Production of rice in 2009-10 stands at 89.13 million tonnes, wheat 80.71 million tonnes, coarse cereals 33.77 million tonnes, pulses 14.59 million tonnes, oilseeds 24.9 million tonnes and sugarcane 277.8 million tonnes. Meanwhile Monsoon activity has revived with many parts of the country receiving good rains, raising the prospects of a strong harvest that should help calm soaring food prices.
