Food grain stocks above six hundred 40 lakh tones: Thomas

The Food and Public Distribution Ministry has said that food grain stocks in the country with the government procurement agencies are well above six hundred 40 lakh tonnes. In a statement released in New Delhi, the ministry on Friday said that food grain stocks comprise about two hundred 70 lakh tonnes of rice and over three hundred 70 lakh tonnes of wheat. The Food and Public Distribution Minister K V Thomas has said that there is enough food grains to meet the needs of the country.

Mr. Thomas said that centre will give special attention towards the North Eastern states to improve the Public Distribution System in the region. The Minister also reaffirmed the government's commitment to enact National Food Security Act at the earliest. He added that the act ensures availability of food grains at reasonable prices to all, with a special focus on the weaker and vulnerable sections of the society.
