Fonseka vows to fight against Rajapakse

Sri Lanka's former top military officer, General Sarath Fonseka who resigned last week vowed today to fight for democracy amid reports that he may be the consensus presidential candidate fielded by the major opposition parties at the upcoming elections. General Fonseka, who quit as Chief of Defence Staff following differences with the Sri Lankan President, in a letter written to the rank and file of the army, said he is committing himself to restoring the democratic rights of the people.<br/>AIR correspondent Kanchan reports from Colombo that the man who everyone believes is eyeing the top post in Sri Lanka , Retd Gen Sarath Fonseka today vowed to restore what he termed as rapid deterioration of democracy even as President Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted that every single of the nearly three lakhs war displaced Tamil civilians would be sent back to their original villages in the next few weeks.<br/>Sri Lankan President in his meeting with UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordinator John Holmes last evening said that majority of the IDPs have already been resettled and have been provided with infrastructure facilities and common amenities with full security.<br/>Earlier, in a letter written in Sinhala addressed to the Sri Lankan troops , the retired General pledged to work to restore human rights, media freedom, social justice, ethnic unity and peaceful coexistence and said that he will be by their side like a shadow<br/>Meanwhile, the government said that proposed Hambantota International Airport , which will cost around 210 million US dollars will get off the ground before the month end at Mattala.<br/>
