Fonseka to face court martials on April 6

General (retd) Sarath Fonseka, who is now in military custody, is set to face two court martials on 6th of April 2010 after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa issued a fresh convening order by nominating three new senior Army officers to the second Court Martial.<br/><br/>The newly constituted second court martial is expected to hear charges against General Fonseka’s contravention of military procurement procedures. It had earlier adjourned its sittings on March 17, 2010 preferring it to be reconvened. The process of court martial may take a few weeks before a determination will be made by the jury.<br/><br/>Retired General Fonseka is a Democratic National Alliance candidate for Thursday’s general elections from the Colombo district. He contested President Rajapaksa at last January’s presidential elections as the common opposition candidate and lost the race by a margin of 1.8 million votes. He was taken into military custody shortly after the election.<br/><br/>Meanwhile Mrs Anoma Fonseka , wife of Sarath Fonseka has appealed to the ICRC to intervene on her behalf alleging that her husband is being detained at Navy headquarters in conditions that are harmful to his health.
