Retired General turned politician Sarath Fonseka on Saturday hit out at the Rajapaksa regime from the platform of United National Party (UNP) on the ground of corruption and lamented that the Presidency was being run like his personnel fiefdom involving his family.Sarath Fonseka made his first public appearance on Saturday at the 54th United National Party (UNP) convention and promised the large gathering there that he will work hard to abolish the executive Presidency. He also gave assurance to find a solution to the ethnic conflict.UNP , the main opposition party in the current Parliament and has extended support to the candidature of General Fonseka for the forth coming Presidential polls.On Friday , at a meeting of Trade union representatives, said he is a novice to politics, and he is backed by parties , the UNP , JVP , SLMC and the DPF . He also said that the senior members of the ruling UPFA will also switch allegiance to him in his fight against what he called the ‘prevailing tyranny’ in the country.He said, he is contesting the Presidential elections as a non party candidate with the backing of the mainstream political parties, but it is his hope that parties in the ruling coalition will support him. These seniors are right now not in a position to express freely, he added.Speaking to AIR/DD , UNP MP ,Ravi Karunayake said that the ‘General’s candidature was received very well by the UNP party workers and they responded well to the Corruption issue of the Rajapaksa Government’.
