FM warns stern action against service tax defaulters

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has warned stern action against service tax defaulters. Chidambaram urged all concerned to take the opportunities of voluntary compliance in 2013 to pay area taxes without any penalty by December this year. He was taking part in an inter-active session on service tax in Kolkata this evening. Appealing to the business community, Chidambaram said that non payment of 50 lakh rupees service tax will be liable to arrest and prosecution. The Finance Minister said that 17 lakh people have registered their names for payment of service tax through this scheme. But so far only seven lakh people have made payment. He said, 13 people have so far been arrested for non payment of service tax and government is keeping close watch to nab tax evaders.
