The Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee will hold a pre-budget meeting with the state Finance Ministers in New Delhi on Wednesday. He will deliberate on issues that will have a bearing on the budget for the year 2011-12. Price rise, goods and service tax are some of the issues likely to come up for discussions in the meeting. The meeting is also expected to review the impact of fiscal and monetary measures to revive the economy and identify the role of states in ensuring to bridge the gap between the demand and supply. The measures to tackle the high rate of inflation is also expected to be at the centre of the discussions with Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council revising the inflation rate to be around 7 per cent. Containing fiscal deficit, enhancing agriculture productivity, plugging the leakages in the Mahatma Gandhi National Riral Employment Guarantee Programme, tapping the non-conventional sources of energy are some other issues to be flagged in the meeting. Mr. Mukherjee today held discussions with bankers and urged them to play their role for greater financial inclusion of rural population. Mr. Mukherjee, in his pre-budget discussions, also exchanged views with economists, captains of industry, agriculture experts, trade unions and NGOs to take their inputs to finalise the budget proposals for the next fiscal.
