FM says, govt never said it won’t disclose names of black money a/c holders; names will be revealed as charges are filed in court

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the government has never said that it will not reveal the names of Indians who have stashed black money in foreign bank accounts.

In an interview to a private TV News channel, Mr. Jaitely said that the Congress will be embarrassed by the names when the government reveals them in court.

He said double taxation avoidance treaties prohibit the disclosure of names till charges are framed. The Minister, however, said the process of revealing the name will not take much longer and once government informs the court, the names will automatically come out in public. Mr. Jaitely said it is the Congress who needs to be worried, not the BJP.

He also stressed that the tax treaties which compel confidentiality at this stage of investigation were signed by the Congress government in 1995.

Last week, the opposition Congress had attacked the Narendra Modi government over its stand in the Apex Court that it can not disclose the information received from abroad related to black money saying the move will be violation of tax agreements.
