In his more than hour-long reply to the debate, the Finance Minister, Mr. Mukherjee said that the government is sensitive to the price rise issue but said that it is the collective responsibility of the political leadership both at the centre and the states to ensure that the impact of the rising prices is minimised specially for the vulnerable sections of society.Mr Mukherjee said unless coordinated efforts are made in this regard, it will be difficult to achieve this objective. Outlining various measures undertaken by the government to address the issue, the Finance Minister said that these will help in reducing the pressure of inflation in the long run.He, at the same time, said that there will be inflationary pressures as economy grows.Responding to the reply, the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Swaraj said the Finance Minister has not come out with any specific measure to provide relief to the Aam Admi saying that the government is not only insensitive but is also in the state of confusion.She said the gap between the rich and the poor is continuously increasing. Mrs Swaraj said the government should at least roll back the recent hike in the in petroleum products.She also suggested that the Centre could also follow the model once Punjab had adopted of giving wheat and rice advances to the employees which could address the problem of storage of foodgrains.AIR Correspondent says that the resolution was taken up after an understanding was reached between the opposition and the government over the deadlock over the type of discussion on the price rise issue. The opposition has dropped its demand for insisting on voting on the matter.The BJP today attacked the government for its alleged failure in controlling price rise. Initiating the debate in the House on the inflationary pressures on economy and its adverse impact on the common man the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Arun Jaitley alleged that the government has not taken enough steps to meet the demand side constraints. He charged the government of targeting the non Congress ruled states than focussing on the growing concern of common man on rising prices. Jayanti Natarajan of the Congress said that fiscal and administration measures taken by the government are showing results and this is reflected in the down slide of the inflation. She strongly pleaded that strict action against hoarders and black marketers and urged the state governments to plug the loop holes in the public distribution system so as to enable the targeted population to get the benefits. CPI(M)leader Sitaram Yechury demanded a rollback of prices of petroleum products while BSP leader Brijest Pathak said the central government is not doing enough to tackle the price rise. The debate remained inconclusive.
