FM justifies rail fare hike, says it is a difficult but correct decision

Finance Minister Arun Jaitely has justified the government decision to hike passenger fare and freight charges of Railways saying that it is difficult but a correct decision.

In a Facebook post, Jaitely said that the Indian Railways for the last few years have been running at a loss and the only way that Railways can survive is when users pay for the facilities that they avail. He said the country must decide whether it wants a world-class railway or a ramshackled one.

Jaitley further said that the NDA government has only implemented the decision taken by the UPA government on fare hike.

He added that the Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda has taken a challenging decision as the choice before him was whether to allow the Railways to bleed or implement the decision of pervious government.
