The Captains of Industry and representatives of Chambers of Commerce on Tuesday held discussions with the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi. This was the second round of talks by the Finance Minister as a part of pre-budget discussions. Speaking to reporters after the discussions, the President of the FICCI Rajan Bharti Mittal said that they urged the government to maintain excise duty at the current level. Mr. Mittal said, it was also suggested to reduce corporate tax from the existing level 30 to 25 per cent. The representatives also added that they pleaded with the Finance Minister not to withdraw the stimulus packages pushed into the economy in the wake of global economic melt down. Earlier, he held talks with the representatives of all stake holders in the agriculture sector. Mr. Mukherjee is now scheduled to meet the Economists on Thursday. He will also exchange views with the Trade Union leaders.
