Seeking US investment for India's infrastructure sector development, capital markets reforms and cooperation on the Group of 20 efforts to reduce trade imbalances will be high on the agenda of talks between Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner during Mukherjee's visit to Washington. During his stay, he is also expected to meet top US corporate leaders and focus on reassuring foreign investors that India continues to be an attractive investment destination. India needs an investment of over one trillion US dollar for the development infrastructure in the 12th plan period. To this effect, the government unveiled Infrastructure Debt Fund guidelines last week, which seeks to attract long-term foreign investors the sector. The two countries will also deliberate on macro economic issues including global rebalancing and G-20. The finance minister will deliver a keynote address at the conference on ‘US-India Economic and Financial Partnership’, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in collaboration with the Brookings Institute of the US. Mr Mukherjee is leading a delegation that includes RBI Governor D Subbarao, Sebi chairman U K Sinha, Economic Affairs Secretary R Gopalan, Chief Economic Advisor Kaushik Basu and several businessmen. Mukherjee will also meet the US National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and hold policy discussions with key US economic policy makers including Federal Reserve chairman Ben S Bernanke.
