Floods submerge 1,600 villages in 16 districts of Assam

In Assam, incessant rain has submerged 1,600 villages in 16 districts. Official sources said, around 10 lakh people are reeling under flood water. The Brahmaputra and some of its tributaries are flowing above danger level and also maintaining a rising trend.

A red alert has been sounded in Majuli Island and all educational institutions have been closed indefinitely from today due to the rise of water level.

Air Force, Army, National and state Disaster Response Force are undertaking relief and rescue works. Around 8,000 people have been rescued in Tinsukia, Sonitpur and Dhemaji districts.

The Air Force air-dropped 250 quintals of food items among marooned people at Sootea and Sadia on Sunday. Flood water also damaged standing crops and fishery industries. One lakh 45 thousand people have taken shelter at 169 relief camps.

Dibru-Saikhowa National park and Pobitara Wildlife Sanctuary are submerged in flood water. Surging water also submerged 100 anti-poaching camps in Kaziranga National Park.

Forest teams and the members of the Centre of Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation, CWRC are carrying out relief and rescue works at Kaziranga.
